“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”Matthew 5:16 NIV
You’re driving bumper to bumper on the 405 when a mad man, yes a man that is unreasonably mad swerves in front of you steering you off the road. How do you respond? You are the only minority at work and you overhear a group of your co-workers making racist comments, what you gon’ do? You’re watching the news to learn that a terrorist killed 49 innocent club-goers in Orlando. Does hatred enter your heart?
No matter how infuriated we may be at the world, we have a responsibility. Regardless of the ignorance we deal with day to day, as a representative of Christ, we cannot allow others to steal our shine. I’m talking about the light that God has placed inside of us as believers. This light must shine bright so that everyone knows whom we serve. Only a follower of Jesus can be attacked in every direction and maintain love in their heart.
As children we are taught that if another kid throws the first punch, hit them back. However, God’s instruction teaches us something very different. When Jesus walked this earth He faced every insult, mistreatment, and pain humanly possible, yet He always responded in humility while bragging on His father. Knowing what God is capable of and that He always has the final say should sustain our hearts, calm our emotions, and ease our fears.
I encourage you to let your light shine. Do not be blinded by distractions of injustice, war, and corrupt leadership. Activate your faith through the power of prayer. Lean not on your own understanding but rather trust that God will restore all that the locusts have eaten; everything that has been snatched from Christ’s followers will be restored a hundredfold. But we must carry ourselves as faithful servants. We are His representers.
