Definition of a Girl Boss

girlboss.png

In the past, to be a “G” or the “H.N.I.C” (I’ll keep this term abbreviated) signified importance and worth. Now everybody claims to be a boss. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be in charge if using your power for good. The number of business savvy women has increased dramatically over the last few decades and these individuals have coined the term, “girl boss.” A girl boss is a female who is making strides whether in business, family, or life in general. She is bold, making major moves while remaining fierce.

The term “girl boss” was popularized by the book of the same title written by entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso. A young woman who soared from dumpster diving to millionaire status, Sophia has definitely paid the cost to be the boss. And there are so many women like her that are giving us aspirations of being more than the stereotypes of our role. We can be mothers, caregivers, nurturers AND/OR business owners, executives, and mentors.

Women are born multi-taskers. I’m famous for cooking up a meal while simultaneously getting in a good work out and my daily scripture reading. I know divas who hold down full-time jobs, full-time class schedules and full-time motherhood. Handling responsibility comes naturally to us. We may have moments of distress, but we take on our daily duties with class and order.

Everyone knows that I am a huge fan of the Mowry twins. During the “I Woke Up Like This” segment of The Real, co-host Tamera Mowry-Houseley showed her morning regimen. She wakes up around 3:30am to feed her newborn baby girl, goes back to sleep for about an hour to wake back up at 5am to tape her show The Real. She is a mother of two, devoted wife, entrepreneur, talk show host, the list goes on. She is the definition of a girl boss.

In contrast there’s me. I am single with no children. I have three writing jobs, this blog, and I’m a waitress on the side. I like to think of myself as a girl boss too.

Needless to say women are the strongest group of people in the world; “Strong enough to bear the children and get back to business,” in the words of Queen Bey. But the definition of a woman in charge is what you make it. You may be a working woman or a stay-at-home mama making sure the dinner table is set, homework is complete, and heads are in beds by 9pm. You deserve a round of applause, a day at the spa and a good foot rub. Be in charge but please do not neglect time for yourself. Your mind and body require it!

Know any girl bosses? Tell us about her in the comment section below. We may just feature her in a future post.
