NBC has signed on to air a live musical production of the 1978 classic film, The Wiz. Two big names have just been added to the pot guaranteeing this to be a pretty epic event. Academy Award-nominated Queen Latifah and singer/actress Mary J. Blige have both been confirmed to join this all-star cast. Latifah will play the Wiz and Blige will star as the Wicked Witch of the West.
It was previously announced that Stephanie Mills, who played Dorothy in the 1975 Broadway production, will play Auntie Em. The original film starred Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Lena Horne as the good witch Glinda, and Richard Pryor as the Wiz.
The Wiz Live! is executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of NBC’s 2013 and 2014 musical telecasts The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! The production will feature acrobats from Cirque du Soleil.
Be sure to tune into NBC December 3 to see this classic adaptation brought to life.
