Lauryn Hill Covers Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’

Ms. Lauryn Hill provides a classic cover of legend Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.” Lauryn was one of the artists chosen to contribute to Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone supporting the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? The compilation will release July 10th and also feature Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lalah Hathaway, Common, Alice Smith, Jazmine Sullivan, Simone’s daughter Lisa, among others.

A legend in her own right, Hill ended up recording six of Simone’s hits rather than the two she signed on for. She also served as producer of the album alongside Robert Glasper.

Lauryn released this statement:

“Because I fed on this music, both hers and lovers like her, like my basic food, I believed I always had a right to have a voice. Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift.”

The film’s producer, Jayson Jackson, also served as executive producer of the album and was a part of Hill’s former management team. He recalled a moment that Hill and Simone met in 1999 on tour:

“Nina was wheeled into her green room and told everyone to get out,” Jackson tells Rolling Stone. “I had no idea who she was and was prepared to bounce her from the room until I saw Lauryn’s mother shedding tears. I asked why she was crying and all she could muster was, ‘That’s Nina Simone, she is one of my heroes.'”

The documentary will premiere on Netflix June 26th. Zoe Saldana’s role as Simone in the biopic Nina screened at Cannes in 2014 but has not moved forward. Maybe due to the backlash she received for attempting this role.
